Self care is an act of taking care of your general wellbeing, something that is very vital for our minds and bodies.
Doing that has several benefits primarily:
1. Relieve stress.
If you are like most people, you probably deal with a lot of stress. This can be stress from your job, financial situation, relationships, or other personal reasons. Self care is important for stress relief because it provides activities that help distract you, improve your mood, and help you take better care of yourself. Keep in mind that self care can be anything from taking a bath to going for a walk, so there are tons of options available.
2. Positively create an impact in your life by:
a) Improving your mental health in addition to relieving your stress, self care can also help in other aspects of your mental health. Perhaps you have anxiety or depression, and are trying to relax while also figuring out your triggers. Well, things like writing in a journal and walking help you accomplish both. You are able to focus more on your mental health during these activities, so you are practicing self care while actually improving your mental health at the same time.
b) Raising your self-esteem
Did you know taking better care of yourself can help with your self esteem? Lack of proper self care often causes you to feel bad about yourself, such as from not getting a manicure or pedicure in a while, or not exercising. These types of activities make you feel healthy, fit, and beautiful, which goes a long way with self care. With higher self esteem, you raise your confidence, and that can help boost your mood and help with your stress levels.
3. Improve relations with those close to you including family, colleagues and friends
I am an individual who immensely enjoys a lot of quality time by myself. During those times, I get to self-evaluate the progress made in terms of dealing with difficult times, take time to meditate and calm my body and mind. Quality time can also be spent around those you love and care for. Some activities you could participate in are having regular hang outs with your family. It is however, imperative to have sometime to yourself once in a while. A close friend once confessed about their fear of being alone so they always desired to be surrounded by people at all times. I respected that because we are not the same.
Whenever you can, try to take as little as 30 minutes to yourself. If you live by yourself, you could set some personal time or what I would call ‘quiet days’ for a personal reconnect. Meditate, stay in and fix yourself a nice meal, journal. Whichever activity relaxes you, just go for it.
For those in shared spaces, identify a time when the house is less swarmed. There are so many ways to do that. Step out for a walk, go swimming, window shopping, meditate early in the morning, afternoon or late at night depending on when it feels the most peaceful for you. My friends sometimes find it weird when I tell them that I sometimes take myself out for coffee, dinner. The power of spending time by yourself is something no one should ever underestimate.
You Deserve Some Quality Time
This quality time gives you a short break from your daily life, and can be so wonderful for your self care.
Try to give yourself at least a few minutes a day for self care. It will help your stress and other areas of mental health.
